Multi-Tiered Gifting

Multi-Tiered Gifting awards different free gifts at increasing spend or quantity thresholds. Customers unlock more valuable or additional gifts as they reach higher tiers.

How It Works

When a customer qualifies for a tier:

• The tier's gift is automatically added to their cart at $0

• Each tier's gift appears as a separate product line item that is discounted by 100% in cart and checkout

Example:

• Tier 1: Spend $50 → Free Tote

• Tier 2: Spend $100 → Free Tote + Free Water Bottle

• Tier 3: Spend $150 → Free Tote + Free Water Bottle + Free Hat

Gift Behavior 

You can configure whether gifts are automatically added when customers qualify and automatically removed when they no longer qualify. Learn more about how to update your schema in the automatic gift add and removal settings. 

Scroll down to Free Gift Redemption in your discount to enable or disable gift replacements. If enabled, as the customer reaches new thresholds, the previous tier’s gift will be replaced with the new tier’s gift. 

Setup

1. Open the Abra app and click Create Promotion

2. Set Visibility to Private while configuring

   • Note: Public visibility makes the promotion active immediately on save

3. Scroll to Discounts and click Add a discount

4. Select Volume Discount

5. Enter a URL-friendly discount code (e.g., TIERED-GIFTING)

6. Configure your settings:

   • Customer Buys - Set qualification requirements (spend, quantity, eligible items)

   • Purchase Type - One-time, subscription, or both

   • Variant-Level Requirements - Control whether customers must meet thresholds using the same variant or can mix variants

   • Tiers - Set the threshold and gift for each tier (up to 5 tiers)

   • Customer Eligibility - All customers or a specific Shopify segment

   • Usage Limits - Per order, per customer, or total uses

   • Sales Channels and Markets - Limit if needed

7. Click Save

8. Scroll to Storefront Blocks, activate the blocks you want to use, and place them in your theme editor

   • Recommended: Tiered Banner on product pages + Gift Banner in cart

Storefront Display

Use Tiered Banners to show customers their progress across all tiers. Gift Banners can display which gifts are currently unlocked.

Recommended block placement:

• Tiered Banner on product pages (shows progress toward next tier)

• Gift Banner in cart (shows unlocked gifts)

Limitations

• Multi-Tiered Gifting will not work if any tier's gift product is out of stock

• Shopify automatic discounts may conflict with Abra promotions and cause unpredictable behavior (e.g., gifts not discounted, codes not applying). 

• If automatic add and removal settings are not configured properly in settings, gifts are automatically added once per session (not re-added if manually removed) and automatically removed when the customer no longer qualifies. 

• Each tier's gift is evaluated independently, removing qualifying items may remove higher-tier gifts while lower-tier gifts remain if their thresholds are still met

• Maximum of 5 tiers per promotion
