Combining and Stacking Discounts
With Shopify’s Combinations feature, you can enable multiple discounts to be added to a single cart. Stacked discounts are a type of Combination where multiple product discounts are supported on the same line item.
What are Combinations?
Abra Combinations allow you to add multiple discounts to a single promotion that will work together in cart and checkout. Instead of creating separate promotions for each offer, you can run multiple incentives together as part of one customer experience.
For example, a single promotion could include:
A gift offer tied to one collection
A tiered volume discount
A clearance discount
All of these discounts can work together within the same promotion when combinations are enabled. This makes it easier to create more sophisticated campaigns without forcing customers to choose between offers. Abra supports combining multiple discount types into a single promotion experience.
How to Activate Combinations
In Abra, Combinations are configured at the discount level.
Open the discount you want to use within your promotion
Navigate to the Combinations section
Choose which discount classes this discount can combine with:
Product discounts
Order discounts
Shipping discounts
Save the discount
Repeat this process for any other discounts you want to participate in the combination
Important: Combinations must be enabled on every discount that you want to work together. If a discount has not been configured to combine, it will not apply in cart or checkout with other discounts even if it is added to the same Abra promotion.
Once saved, any discounts within the promotion that share compatible combination settings will be eligible to work together.
Common Use-Cases
Multi-market promotions - Offer different discounts, gifts, or thresholds by country or market within a single promotion
Complex seasonal campaigns - Combine multiple promotion types for events like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, or holiday sales
Clearance campaigns - Run clearance discounts alongside storewide offers without creating separate promotions
VIP and loyalty programs - Allow members to receive exclusive incentives on top of existing promotions
What is Discount Stacking?
Stacked discounts enable multiple product discounts being applied to the same line item. For example, you may have a 20% off influencer discount on a product that was already discounted 10% off. With discount stacking, both discounts will now be applied to the same cart line item.
In order to utilize discount stacking:
Discounts must be created using Shopify Discount Functions (Discounts created through Abra use Shopify Discount Functions)
How Stacking Works
Stacking uses a double opt-in system. For two discounts to stack, each discount must reference the other’s tag within its stacking settings.
Shopify uses tags to group discounts. When a discount references another discount’s tag, it is opting in to stack with that discount. Both discounts must opt in before stacking will occur.
For example:
Discount A
Tag:
loyaltyAllowed to stack with:
influencer
Discount B
Tag:
influencerAllowed to stack with:
loyalty
Because both discounts reference each other’s tags, Abra knows they can stack together. If only one discount references the other, stacking will not occur.
Use Cases
Run loyalty discounts on top of an existing sales
Layer influencer or affiliate discounts on top of seasonal promotions
Stacking two or more product discounts on a line item
Setup Flow
Create the product discounts you want to combine and stack, and add them all to the same promotion

Save your discounts
Once your discounts are configured, you can enable stacking:
Open the first discount, navigate to Combinations section and enable Allow stacking with other product discounts
Add the tags of any discounts you want it to stack with
Repeat for the remaining discounts
Ensure each discount references the tags of its stacking counterparts
Save and test your promotion
